Obituary of Marcie Bilton
Martha Marcelline “Marcie” Simien Bilton, 97, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Born in Lake Charles, LA, on December 29, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Sidney and Eva (Chapman) Simien, the oldest of their seven children. After graduating High School, Marcy enrolled at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX. It is there where she met her soulmate, Harry Bilton, Jr.. They were united in marriage on December 15, 1951, a blessed union of 72 years. Harry passed away April 27, 2023.
Marcie and Harry relocated to Rome and she became an Elementary School Teacher with the Rome City School District. She was awarded the Rome Teacher of the Year and retired after 42 years of dedicated service.
Marcie was very active in the community and was involved in many things. She was Past President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. She was a member of the Rome Chapter of the NAACP, Retired Teachers Association and Wednesday Morning Club. She received the Community Service Award from Senator Joseph Griffo in honor of her many years of contributing to the betterment of the community.
Marcie loved sports and participated in several including, bowling, golf, tennis and bocce. She coached the RFA Girls Bowling team for over 20 years as well. She and her husband were constantly on the go, enjoying time spent time together with family and friends.
Marcy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Yvette Renee Bilton-Rogers and Jonas; two grandchildren, Denesha and Alethea Evans; two great-grandchildren, Demetrius Evans (Clara) and Jaden McDaniel; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome NY 13440. Family and friends may call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440, on Friday, July 7th from 4-6:00 p.m.
