4/27/2023 - My sister Winifred is being laid to rest today. Her passing has weighed heavily on my and my family's hearts. Especially since the passing of our parents, James and Maureen Ridley, I have felt that Winifred was the 'safe harbor' for me and my siblings. She was always even tempered and kind. She never failed to tell me and my family that she loved us. Winifred and I were separated (by distance only) in 1969 when part of our family stayed in New York and others moved to California. I continued to stay in California with my wife and our son since the mid 1970s. We visited Winifred and her family in New York a few times and she came to California a few times. But distance did not keep us apart. Our phone calls and text messages always left us feeling that we were still very close - and always loved and appreciated. I retire in December this year. My wife and I have been planning to visit Winifred and her family in the spring of 2024. Because we were so anxiously anticipating that trip, Winifred's passing has hit me and my wife quite hard. I keep hearing in my head the lyrics of the James Taylor song Fire and Rain, "I always thought that I'd see you again." My memories of growing up with her and our other siblings are quite vivid. Those wonderful memories comfort me. My wife and I have dozens of photo albums. We look at the pictures often. Winifred will always be in our hearts, our minds, and easily seen in our photographs. Me and my family send our love and prayers to Clayton, Patrick and Danny and their families, Winifred's extended family, and her many friends.

I worked with Winnie at Farnsworth but I've known Clayton and Winnie since age 15. I remember how beautiful she and Maureen looked on their wedding day. I even remember babysitting Patrick along with the kids of Mary Jane and bunky Seymour, George and Sylvia Seymour and Stella gerow and her husband. I remember coming up and helping Winnie to make homemade pies one thanksgiving.. the day that I found out Danny liked to store bits of food in his cheeks, she was a fresh air kid from New York city who stayed with my aunt and uncle Curtis and Betty vanderworken. That's where I met her. The last time I saw Winnie she had had an operation. She looked good. Though we didn't see each other much I still considered her a friend. I will truly miss her. May she be forever be in our heart.

Q: How would you describe Winifred to someone who had never met them? A: Be prepared to adopt a mom. She always has time to listen. But if you go to her, also be prepared to do some listening of your own. I am blessed that you thought of stopping in to say hello on my short visits to NY. I will miss those chats.
