Obituary:Rose F. Jones, 88, of the Masonic Care Community, died on Sunday, February 17, 2008, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica. She was born on September 9, 1919, in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Max and Lena Finkelstein. Rose is a graduate of Textile High School in New York City.
During World War II, she helped the war effort, first at the hiring hall for the National Maritime Union dispatching sailors for convoys to England. She was distinguished for the supportive environment she created. Later on during the war, she worked as an engine lathe operator, preparing lenses for bomb sights for the Navy.
She was last employed by the McRoberts Protective Agency at Battery Park in Manhattan, NY, for eighteen years as a bookkepper.
Surviving is a daughter, Natalie Jones, Silver Spring, MD; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Patricia Jones, Rome; a sister, Doris O'Brien, Palm Desert, CA; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by two brothers, Joe Finkelstein and Fred Finkelstein, and her beloved cat, Raspy.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Contributions may be made in Rose's memory to WCNY Public Radio, 506 Old Liverpool Road, PO Box 2400, Syracuse, NY 13220.
