Obituary: Helen A. Smith a resident of the Oneida Extended Care Facility formerly of 5937 Springhouse Road, Rome, N.Y. passed on November 16, 2007. She was an Elementary School Teacher for over 36 years ending her career at Nicholas A. Washburn Elementary School in Oriskany, N.Y. She was born on September 14, 1909 in Vernon, N.Y., the daughter of John and Florence Aegerter. Mrs. Smith attended Rome schools graduating from Rome Free Academy in 1927. She attended Oneonta Normal School and earned her teaching certificate
On April 15, 1933 she married Charles A. Smith in Rome. A union of over 50 years until Mr. Smith passed on in June of 1984.
Helen was a member of the Lowell Methodist Church and also the organist of the church for many years. She was also a life member of the Lowell Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Eastern Star,New York State Teachers Retirement and past president of the United Methodist Women of the Lowell Church and past member of the Westlanders.
She is survived by a son Lloyd A. Smith of Rome; a daughter, Charlene F. Baranowski also of Rome; a son-in-law, Richard E.Baranowski, of Fishers, Indiana; a son-in-law, Wayne R. McGregor, seven grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Linda McGregor of Geneva; Scott and Celeste McGregor of Rome; Gary and Elizabeth McGregor of Fairport; Kurt and Karen McGregor of Rome; Kathleen and James Rafferty of Suffern, New York; Todd Baranowski of Rome; Amy and Jeremy DePietro of Coventry, Ct. and sixteen great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn McGregor.
Helen thoroughly enjoyed her games of Scrabble with her son and grandson, Scott. She had a great spirit and will be greatly missed by her family and special friends, Al and Jennie Seelman, Sandy Roach and Kay McGregor.
The family would like to thank all 2nd floor staff at Oneida Extended Care for their compassion and care.
Services: Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome Monday 1:00P.M. Interment New Union Cemetery, Town of Verona. Friends may call at the funeral home 3:00P.M. to 5:00P.M. Sunday. Contributions maybe made in Helen's memory to the Lowell Methodist Church.
