Obituary of Jose R. Maldonado
Jose R. Maldonado, 97 of Rome, New York passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025. He was born on March 26, 1927, in Manati, Puerto Rico, son of Isabelino Maldonado Nazario and Tomasa Aulet Carrion. He moved from Puerto Rico to New York City in 1952 where he met and married Pura Marrero Rivera on December 3, 1955. Jose worked in middle management at Jacobi Hospital in NYC until his retirement in 1985.
His faith in God was the preeminent driver of his life and activities. He attended and successfully completed the certificate program in Theology at the Spanish American Bible Institute in the 1950s. He was an active member of the Thessalonica Christian Church for over 50 years, serving in several capacities including as Elder, Deacon and Trustee.
In 2010, Jose and his wife Pura moved to Rome, New York to be closer to his two sons residing here. He was an active and integral member of the Maranatha Christian Church. A robust and active man, he kept active in his later years, primarily caring for his wife. During his lifetime, he had the privilege of being able to travel numerous times throughout Western Europe, Israel, the Caribbean as well as Central America. Highlights in his life included marrying the love of his life, Pura, as well as attending the graduations of his wife from graduate school at CUNY, son Nelson from Pinecrest Seminary, his son Joseph from the Einstein College of Medicine as well as the University of Oxford, along with his son Joseph’s Presidency of the Medical Society of the State of New York.
He is preceded in death by his youngest son, the Rev. Nelson Maldonado, 8 siblings, and his parents. He leaves his wife of 69 years as well as his son, Dr. Joseph R. Maldonado, Jr., and numerous nieces and nephews. His family is grateful for the care provided by Drs. Mohammed Seedat, Atul Butala and Thomas Mathew, along with the medical teams at Rome Hospital and Wynn Hospital for their compassionate care in his last days of life. They are especially grateful for the help they received from his nephew and wife, Dario and Norma Otero as well as brother and sister-in-law, Carmelo and Cynthia Marrero. In addition, they thank his extended family and fellow church members who called him and visited him frequently during these past years.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 15th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Maranatha Church, 620 N. Washington St., Rome, NY 13440. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440, on Thursday, January 16th from 4-6:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery.
