Obituary:Hermine Harlander, 97, was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2007.
Hermine was born in Rome, NY on May 16, 1910. She was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Sprau Harlander. Hermine was predeceased by her parents and two siblings, Joseph and Joanne Harlander. She was a proud graduate of the Academy of holy Names in Rome and forged lifelong friendships with the nuns who taught there.
For more than forty years Herm's friendly voice and manner greeted callers and visitors to the offices of Rome Cable from which she retired in 1970. She was recognized as a friend by everyone from the President and executives of Rome Cable to the customers and workers in the mill.
Hermine was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Rome and was a devoted member of the Alter and Rosary Society. Attendance at daily mass and celebrating moments of private prayer were an important part of Herm's life. She enjoyed a circle of special friends with whom she traveled, broke bread and enjoyed card games. Among these friends was Eileen Mitchell who was a special friend, companion, and caregiver for much of Herm's life.
For the last 4 years Hermine resided at Bethany Gardens. The bulletin board in Herm's room was filled with pictures of her "dozens of cousins "and their children, who all considered Hermine a second mother and grandmother. Survivors include cousins Dolores O'Conner of Utica and Delores Loss of Rochester. Three generations of Harlander, Wood, O'Connor and Loss families had their lives blessed by Herm's love and there is a void in all their lives with her passing. Herm would have wanted to offer gratitude to Dr. Todd Podkowka, the staff and residents for the care and friendships she was shown over her time there.
Herm would want all her friends and family to know that she lived long, laughed often and loved much. No one could ask for more.
