Obituary of Walter R. Keeney

Walter Roy Keeney fell off “The Board of Life” on April 30, 2024. His family shares “The Board of Life” process which was discussed often by them.

Walter was born in Osceola, NY on July 27, 1941. Son of Roy & Nina (Gridley) Keeney. He was a 1959 graduate of Camden Central School. Walter married Victoria A. Durant in Oriskany Falls, NY on July 8, 1961. They had five children. Gene (Kathleen), North Bay, NY, Ron (Peter), Takoma Park, MD, Monica Keeney-Sherlock, Columbia, MD, Sandra Coogan, Rome, NY, & Barbara (Michael) Mazurowski, Reno, NV.

Walt has a sister, Doris Lyons of Gulfport, MS. He was pre-deceased by brothers James & Kenneth, as well as his granddaughter Shelly Williams. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Walt was employed at Camden Wire Co. from August 1959 until 1996. He was a machine operator until 1976, then promoted to supervisor. He held various positions, up to Night Superintendent of Operations. Walt served on the Vienna Town Board for eight years, six as Councilman and two as Town Supervisor. Walt was a Life Member of the Vienna Fire Department. He enjoyed puttering with mechanical things and spending quality time on Tug Hill. Many family memories were made and remain memories.

Walt had requested that there be no calling hours. Everyone is welcome to attend the funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s in Taberg, NY on Tuesday, May 7th at 11 am. A private burial will be in McConnellsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Vienna Fire Dept., McConnellsville Volunteer Fire Dept., or a charity of your choice.
