Obituary of Robyn L. Engle
Robyn Lou (Plopper) Engle, 65, passed away peacefully on April 24, after a long and courageous battle with cancer with her loving family by her side.
She was born on December 2, 1958 in Rome, NY to Fremont and Norma (Mathis) Plopper. Robyn attended St. Mary’s and Rome Catholic High School in the graduating class of 1977 where she lettered in tennis, volleyball, basketball and softball and was the vice president of her class. Robyn attended Ithaca College where she was a proud member of Delta Psi Kappa and graduated in 1981 with her degree in physical education. On August 18, 1984 at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Rome, she was united in marriage to Thomas Engle.
Robyn taught physical education at Transfiguration, St. Peter’s and Rome Catholic schools for over 20 years. Many athletes loved being part of her “Wall of Fame” where she kept track of all the newspaper clippings of her students. Robyn also coached girls basketball, soccer and softball at RCH and was the founder of the summer recreation program at Lee Town Park where she was the director for 19 years. She was also very active at her parish, St. Mary’s, as a first communion teacher and a Bingo volunteer.
Surviving besides her loving and devoted husband of 40 years Tom, are her mother Norma, her son and daughter in law Thomas Jr and Megan Engle, her daughter Ashley Engle, her 2 beloved granddaughters Eleanor and Penelope Lou Engle, her sister Patrice Fonda, brother and sister in law Fremont and Patrica Plopper, brothers and sisters in law, James and Joanne Engle, Theodore and Sandra Engle, and Robert and Karen Engle, and several special nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Robyn was pre-deceased by her father Fremont, her niece Kimberly Casler, and her mother and father in law Eleanor and Franklyn Engle.
The family would like to thank the staff at Dr. Levasa-Cesana’s office, Rome Health, Upstate Cancer Center, Hospice and Palliative Care of New Hartford, and Nascentia Health for their tremendous kindness throughout the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1st, at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome NY 13440. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, inc. 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440, on Tuesday, April 30th, from 4-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, the Michelle Adey Foundation, the Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation, Dr. Paul Temple’s Scholarship Fund, or the Joe Ryan Jr. Foundation.
