Obituary of Phyllis I. Lyon
Phyllis I. Lyon, 88, of Rome, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024, with her loving family by her side at Bethany Gardens in Rome. She was born in Rome on September 27, 1935, a daughter of the late Charles and Mildred (Flemming) Taylor. On September 22, 1956, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ira C. Lyon. They were happily married for 64 years until Ira passed away on November 17, 2020. Their family is grateful they are reunited.
Phyllis was a retired associate at Wal Mart in Rome. She previously worked at Rome Manufacturing and General Electric. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church. Phyllis’ passion was her family. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Greaty.”
Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Sharon Smith and Laurie Voci (Greg); seven grandchildren, Jacob Smith (Kristin), Justin Smith, Joshua Smith (Katie), Kylie Mitchell (David), Brittany Neiderer (Kevin), Adam Voci (Kelly) and Kara Boone (Evan). Greaty has eleven great-grandchildren, Brynn, Brody, Jameson, Jackson, Taylor, Ike, Ruby, Lily, Avery Belle, McKenna, and Jenna; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Cleo James, Bessie Vlasko and Dolores Babcock; five brothers, Charles, Richard, Thomas, Robert and Byron Taylor; and a son-in-law, Patrick Smith.
The family extends our sincere gratitude for the compassionate caregivers at Bethany Gardens and The Terrace at Woodland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 18th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church , 200 N. James St., Rome NY 13440. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Phyllis’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://act.alz.org) or Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (https://alzfdn.org).
