Obituary of Anne J. Kinney

Please share a memory of Anne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Anne J. Kinney, 92, passed away on February 13, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Rome, NY to Raffaele “Ralph” and Martha Walters Calvani, she attended school at St. Aloysius Academy. Anne told many stories of her childhood growing up in East Rome, the child of an Italian immigrant during the Great Depression. In a community of families like her own, many with few means, she recalled how neighbors helped one another in any way they could. They were hard times, but they were kind times as well. Her selflessness and compassion were born of those experiences.

Anne married Edmund Crowe in Pennsylvania, and they had three children, Edmund, Karen, and Lori Crowe. After they divorced, Anne moved back to Rome and then Camden, where she made a home with her children. She was a devoted mother throughout her life. Anne remarried in 1965 to Kenneth Kinney, a union that lasted until his passing in 2022.

Anne worked several jobs in her life, but the most fulfilling was driving bus for Camden Central Schools. Anne truly cared for the children she drove for and spoke of them fondly. Even after her memory failed her, she never forgot “her kids.” Anne always said “Children and animals, they can’t take care of themselves, so we must,” and so her deeply caring nature extended to animals and stray cats in her neighborhood. Late in life, two such strays, Buddy and Sparky, became pets and companions. Anne always had a great love of reading; so much so, it was hard to keep her in new material!

Surviving are her children, Edmund (Patricia) Crowe of Parish, Karen Leuenberger of Camden, and Lori Crowe (Don Walda) of Camden; stepchildren, Kenneth Williams of North Carolina, Gary Williams of North Carolina, and Patricia Williams of Canastota; her grandchildren, Chone Young, Edward Crowe, Bryce Kent, Jessie Kent, Erin Leuenberger Donhauser and Jonathon Matwijec-Walda; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by husband Kenneth Kinney, grandchildren Corri and Michael Tucker, great-grandchildren Brandon and Mary Howard, sisters Susan Mahl and Norma Fletcher, and brother Joseph Calvani.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to Bethany Gardens Skilled Living Center. Thank you for all the loving care she received there, and the friendships formed. You gave her a new home where she was happy and loved.

At her request, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 9464 State Rt. 13, Camden NY 13316. You may read the obituary and send a message of sympathy at www.nunnandharper.com.
