Obituary of Thomas Serra, Jr.
Thomas Serra, Jr., 89, of Floyd, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Grand of Rome. He was born in Rome on December 14, 1934, a son of the late Thomas and Violet (Lovett) Serra, Sr. Tom was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Class of 1952, and on January 10, 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served until being Honorably Discharged on December 19, 1957. On September 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joan Ryder. She passed away April 19, 2006.
Tom worked for the NYS DOT for 30 years before retiring. He was an active member of the Floyd Fire Department since 1968 and served as the Fire Commissioner for the Town of Floyd since 2016.
Tom enjoyed camping on Lake Ontario and following NASCAR. Every morning for the last 42 years you could find Tom surrounded by his buddies having coffee at the diner, solving the world’s problems.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Serra (Kathy) and Tina Lennon (Matthew); three sons, Thomas E. Serra, David M. Serra (Teresa) and James J. Serra (Krista); a sister, Sonja Recco (Anthony); ten grandchildren, Jessica Torres (Ricky), Alexander Serra, Jordan Serra, Cody Lennon, Gabrielle Evans (Joshua), Chase Lennon, Trevor Serra, Bradley Serra, Jonathan Wallace and Steven Hawkins; seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Lillian, Carter, Sophie, Sadie, Olivia and Landon; his companion of 12 years, Jennie S. Kemp; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Ortensia Mallory; and two brothers, Lewis and Joseph Serra.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 16th, at 6:00 p.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440. Interment will take place in Floyd Cemetery in the spring. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service from 3-6:00 p.m.
