Obituary of Margaret Grow
Margaret (Margee) Burns Grow passed away suddenly at home on Friday, January 5, 2024. Born on December 18, 1943, in Alton, IL, she lived in many parts of the country but spent her formative years in Briarcliff Manor, NY, attending Briarcliff High School. Margee then earned a degree in French and English at St. Lawrence University, where she met the love of her life, David. Initially, she embarked on a career as a secondary French teacher before accompanying her husband during his service in the US Army, spending four years in Ft. Rucker, AL.
Margee and David settled in Rome and started a family. As soon as her children were all in school, Margee began her 20-year career as an elementary school teacher, while also earning a Masters Degree in Education from Elmira College. Throughout her tenure, she was known for her hard work, dedication and passion for teaching. Even after her retirement, Margee maintained contact with many of her students, a testament to the lasting impact she had on those whose lives she touched.
More than anything, Margee loved her family. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, cherishing the special times spent together at Raquette Lake, NY every summer. She had a wonderful group of friends and extended family for whom she provided and received support and encouragement. Above all, Margee was very spiritual, fostering a strong relationship with God, leaving her family confident that she is now at peace in heaven with the Lord.
Margee is preceded in death by her parents, Robert K. and Neva Burns of Briarcliff Manor, NY, and her brother, James Burns of Salt Lake City, UT. She is survived by her devoted husband, David C. Grow, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. Margee leaves behind a legacy through her loving children: Karen Grow Bobowick and her husband Todd, along with their sons Colden and Hayden; Brian Grow and his significant other, Christina D'Amore, and his daughters Kaitlin and Sarah; and Susan Grow and her significant other, Joel Previte, along with Susan's children Sam, Molly, and Henry Colmey.
A funeral service to honor Margee will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation hours on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home in Rome, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to Zion Episcopal Church in Rome, the Rome Community Foundation or a Veteran’s Organization of choice.
