Obituary of Joseph W. Barry
Joseph William Barry, 99, of New York Mills formerly of Town of Lee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday December 31st, 2023.
He was born on May 25th,1924 in Taylor, Pennsylvania, a son of the late James and Olga (Wilchenski) Barry. Joseph was educated at Sibley Elementary School in Old Forge. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, in the Pacific Theater from December 1942 through December 1945. After the war, Joseph returned home and married Helen Petrosky, the love of his life, on June 1st, 1946 in St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton, PA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen on September 29th, 2017. Joe’s greatest treasure in life was his beautiful wife of 71 years.
Joseph worked different factory, construction and painting jobs throughout the years.
Joseph's hobbies included raising and racing pigeons, gardening, and canning with his dear wife. He would move mountains to make those around him happy, he especially loved playing with his grandchildren, whether it was building elaborate snow castles, raking huge piles of leaves to jump into or fishing anywhere with water. He was well known for offering a friendly smile and wave to passerbyers while enjoying the outdoors.
He was a parishioner of St. Paul's Church in Rome.
Joseph is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Stephen Misiaszek of Florida; a son, Joseph Barry Jr. and best friend Wendy Luton of New York Mills; five grandchildren Stephen (Tracy) Misiaszek, Kristy Misiaszek, Lisa Voci, Daniel Barry, and Melissa (Chris) Faga; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a former daughter-in-law, Joy Barry and a beloved family dog, NaJune. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Barry; two brothers, John and Edward and two sisters, Helen and Beverly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 6th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, NY 13440, on Friday, January 5th from 3-6:00 p.m.
