Obituary of Irene J. Hall
Our mom, Irene J. Hall, age 94 years and 7 months, went home to Our Lord on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 after a brief illness. Mom was born December 19, 1928 in Hamtramck, Michigan to Walter and Lottie Badura Grzeskiewicz. Her parents moved back to New York State when mom was an infant and she grew up with her siblings in the area of North Western and Buck Hill. She attended the one room school house on Buck Hill until transferring to Holland Patent High School where she graduated in 1948.
At a Valentine’s Day Dance in Frenchville, mom met the love of her life. Dad had just come home from serving in the Pacific Theatre. They were married on August 14, 1948 at St. Leo’s Church in Holland Patent. They lived in the home they built, their entire lives. From this union they had three children; Darlene, Steven, and Carleen. Mom and Dad were married for 43 years before dad passed away on Feb. 7, 1992.
Mom worked as an attendant at Marcy State Hospital until they started a family, at which time she became a stay-at-home mom. When all of us were out of the nest, she went to work for Quality Inn as a housekeeper. She retired several years later as head housekeeper.
After dad’s death, Mom became involved in activities with St. Peter’s Church. Mom was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church and a member of the St. Peter’s Altar Rosary Society. For many years she washed and ironed all of the altar linens on a weekly basis. Nothing annoyed her more than to see a wrinkled altar cloth. She was a member of the Sister’s of St. Joseph Associates Program and dedicated 25 years of service to the In Mission of the Christ Child. Mom was deeply honored to receive the Immaculata Medallion in recognition of her service to her parish. This award was bestowed by the Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse on December 8, 2013.
Mom is survived by her children: Darlene Utter, Steven Hall and wife Kathy, and Carleen Hall. She is survived by seven grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren: Bonny Beeman (Jeff) and their three children of Rome, Bethany, Theodore, and Zackary; Charles Utter of VA and his son Kevin Utter of Rome; Jason Utter of Albany and his children Logan and Sophia; Matthew Hall (Whitney) of FL and their children, Leta, Edith, and Oliver; Cassandra Loreto (Rick) of Rome and their children, Gracelyn, Lucas, Sophia and Ava; Lynn Wheeler (Ryan) of SC and their children, Madelyn, Raelynn, and Owen; and Kelly Marion of NH. Mom is also survived by her sister Dolores Kotary of Floyd; sister-in-law, Neva Grzeskiewicz of CA; brother-in-law Earl Hall of Rome; son-in-law Patrick Utter of Rome; Godchildren, nieces and nephews.
