Obituary of William H. Netzband
William H. Netzband, Jr., 83, of Rome, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
William was born on February 29, 1940, Leap Years Day, in Rome, NY, the son of the late William and Mary Netzband, Sr. William graduated from Rome Free Academy, and married his high school sweetheart, Sandie, whom he was married to for 63 years on May 21,1960. William was a retired Detective with the Rome Police Department, where he dedicated 40 years to serving his community.
William is survived by his loving wife, Sandra H. Netzband (Rostkwicz) of Rome; children, Kimberly (Shawn) Mindel and Debora (Steven) Preputnik; grandchildren, Travis and Brody Mindel, Joshua and Brianna Preputnik.
William was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. His motto in life was to be an independent thinker, resilient, and determined. He passed these values to his children, as well as his sense of humor. He loved to tell stories and jokes with friends and colleagues over the years. William was a member of many organizations in Rome, including the Elks, Kiwanis, American Ukrainian, and Toccolana Clubs, Frank J. Steczko Post and Polish Home. He valued his connections within these organizations with a strong sense of pride for his community. William was also a member of St. Peter's Church.
William was an avid motorcyclist even into his 70's and member of the Rome Harley Owners Group, having held a President position over the years. His other hobbies included boating, canoeing, and camping throughout the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands. He enjoyed experiencing life and making memories with his wife and family. This was especially true with his Airedale Terriers having bred and raised several litters.
William lived a full life and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 12th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome NY 13440. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc. 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440, on Tuesday, July 11th from 4-7:00 p.m.
