Obituary of Elizabeth M Abbott

Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Elizabeth (Betty) M. Abbott, 95, of Lee Center, NY went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on June 27, 2023, while at home under the loving care of her family.

She was born in a farmhouse in Taberg, NY on November 30, 1927, daughter of the late Alfred Joseph Lewis and Marian Ballard Lewis. She is predeceased by three brothers, Edgar (Sonny), Alfred B (Brother), and Joseph (Bud), and her beloved sister Marie (MacFarland). She attended Camden High School.

She married Edward P. McNamara (deceased) on June 25, 1949. During their 35 years of marriage, they raised 4 children: Michael (deceased), Colleen (Starr) of Rome, Catherine McNamara of Rome, and Maureen (Paul) Croft of Federal Way, WA. Her grandson Jeff (Kim) Utter, and great-granddaughter Payton gave her great delight over the years.

On one of the best days of her life, November 30, 1999, she married Jack R. Abbott (deceased).  Her family happily expanded with the addition of another son and 2 daughters: Loren (Randall) Butters of Rome, Richard (Rick) Abbott of Lee Center, and Lynn Messenger (deceased). They and their 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild made many happy memories together.

In addition, she leaves behind many next-generation nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.

Betty was a member of Lee Center United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Lee Unity Seniors, American Legion Auxiliary, Rome Art & Community Center, and Ava Dorfman Senior Center. She worked for 12 years as a machinist at Rome Specialty Company in Rome.

She and Jack enjoyed traveling to Europe, Great Britain, the Bahamas, Canada, and the Northwest. They spent many winters with good friends in Florida. She loved to dance, garden, feed her birds, paint beautiful pictures, crochet and craft lovely gifts, play games, and most of all, spend time with her family. She will be remembered for her deep faith in Jesus Christ, infectious laughter, zest for life, and great love for her family and friends. Her family is grateful for the many years they had together, making memories and having fun.
