Russ was one of the best Father-In-Law’s anyone could ever ask for and will be truly missed. He regularly had a grin on his face and could make friends with anyone he met whether it was sitting at a bar or walking down the street.
Russ was also a very hard-working man and was always on the go. Even when he came down to visit Beck and I on “vacation” he rarely sat down. He was always looking for a project to work on around the house to keep himself busy.
I will forever miss walking into Susie and Russ’s home and seeing him standing in the kitchen with a smile on his face asking if we wanted anything to eat or drink.
Amen and pass the biscuits.
He was one of a kind.

That Man is a Success
-Robert Louis Stevenson
That man is a success
who has lived well,
laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men and women and the love of children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better than he found it,
who has never lacked appreciation of Earth’s beauty
or failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others,
and gave the best he had.
Russ lived well, laughed often, and loved much. He had a kind heart, made us feel important, cared for, and part of his family from the moment we met him. We understand how precious it is to have someone who loves you like their own & Russ did just that. He took on the role of a father to Scott, a loving father-in-law to me, the best grandpa to Ty, and was someone we could always count on. Thank you to Dee, Deb, & Holly for sharing Russ with us all these years & making us your family too.
I think what I loved most about Russ was how much he loved Susie and how you could see what she meant to him. I will forever remember them walking hand in hand and step for step along the beach during a recent trip to Myrtle Beach; I took a picture of them because in that moment I remember thinking that Love like that is special.
We will be forever grateful for him & and what he meant to our family. We will think of him when we hear a goose call, go for a fish fry, when we cheer on SU & the Steelers, when we have cheese, mustard and crackers, and when we are at the Crick. To say that we are sad & that he will be missed just does not seem like enough. He was a man we loved, respected, and he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Thank you for everything, Russ. Till we meet again- we love you,
Scott, Adja & Ty

Russ,
There’s not enough words to explain the wonderful human being that we were blessed to know in you. You demonstrated your love for life, kindness, and generosity to others on a daily basis. I will cherish our conversations about life, family, and our military experiences. I always enjoyed hearing stories about your child hood, the PA farm, and all the family happenings. Thank you for sharing each of them with us. I am grateful for the way you accepted Tazz, Ally, the boyz, and I like one of your own.
I will always remember the household projects. Let us not forget the homemade Air Conditioner you and I tried to build that at best blew room temperature air. The failed attempt doesn’t mean anything, what’s most important is the quality time we spent together which is irreplaceable.
I will miss our morning coffee sessions, pitch games, and evening night caps. Thank you for everything, we love you forever!
Kevin (Kev) & Tazz Hummel

Our INCREDIBLE Russ
“There are no words to express what you mean to us; and for being the Dad you did not have to be. A beautiful person with a wonderful heart; and we miss you so much since we had to part. We may have not been related by blood, But you loved us more than anyone could. We’ll treasure the memories and not feel sad, because we are so lucky to have the PERFECT Step Dad”
We will FOREVER cherish every moment we shared with You, and see your infectious smile everywhere we go. Thank you for choosing our Mom and family.
WE LOVE YOU, RUSS

Russ was one of the most generous, kind-hearted, patient people I’ve ever known. I think every one of us could go on and on with stories about the ways he has positively touched each of our lives. I wanted to share just a few that come to mind when I think of Russ.
When Russ was still driving truck, I would call him just about every day on my way home from work. My commute from work was about 30 minutes, but of course, I’d get all the way home and we’d still be talking. My husband, Mark, would get home from work and usually ask, “How long did you talk to Russ today?” He didn’t ask IF I talked to him, but how long I talked to him- it kind of became our routine! (And sometimes we’d still be talking when he arrived home!) If I had a trying day, talking with Russ would always make me feel better because he was always so cheerful and always made me laugh. I so much enjoyed our conversations.
Russ was always willing to help anyone, and many times without even having to be asked. One time, Mark and I brought friends from Maryland home to stay the weekend and meet our family. We decided to camp out at the “crick,” and anyone who knows me, knows this is not an activity I enjoyed doing! I called to ask Russ if he had 2 tents we could borrow. After he got over the shock of me telling him I wanted to camp out, he, of course, said we could borrow his tents.
Fast forward, we drove home and when we got down to the crick, our tents were already set up. I remember telling Russ he didn’t have to do that, that we would’ve set them up, and he replied, “I know it, but I wanted to,” which was a very common response made by him over the years. He was so generous and helpful.
I’ll miss some of the little things, like when I call their house and Russ would answer with his famous “ Hello, hello” or “Hey Beck, what’s going on in Florida today?” Or when he would give me the weather report of all the areas where family members live.
I know I speak for all my siblings when I say that Russ was the best stepfather anyone could ask for. But like Jeff said earlier, I didn’t even like putting “step” before “father” when talking about him because he was like my dad. He would do anything for any of us and treated us and our spouses like his own children.
Like I told him in the hospital as we were saying goodbye, the outpouring of phone calls, texts, and Facebook messages we’ve received are all a testament to the wonderful man he was and to the positive impact he had on others. We love and will miss him dearly.

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Russell, a truly selfless and loving person. He possessed an amazing ability to bring kindness and thoughtfulness to those around him. His creative spirit was palpable, while his gentle demeanor won the hearts of many. Russ was a man who deeply cherished his family, and he will always be remembered as a great individual taken too soon from this world. We extend our most sincere condolences and pray for peace during these difficult times. Rest in peace, Russ.

Russ,
I want to thank you for accepting me into this beautiful, close knit, loving family, and … since day one, treating me like I was one of your own( after, obviously passing the extensive background check) ‘ laugh out loud’. You were truly one of the best men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, with your Continuous Love, constant smile and always thinking of everyone else!…. I reached out to one of your long time friends this week with the unfortunate news of your passing, and his response described you to a ‘T’!
“If the world was all like Russ we’d have no problems or worries No greed and complete honesty and happiness”. ❤️
Forever in our hearts,
I Love You,
John

Russ, This has been one of hardest pills I've ever had to swallow. For 20+ years you and I along with "Goosehunter","Rookie", "Bobo", "Coppercoin" "Topper" and many others started the Sunday run at the "Guilderland Roundtable" trying to solve the world's problems. Didn't have much success, but we knew we could make it through the week with a laugh or two. We spent literally millions of miles hauling wire together and you will dearly missed. Until the next "meeting".
Rest In Peace.

Russ you will be missed by many. Over the years we have driven thousands and thousands of miles together. The hours we have spent solving the world’s problems at “The Knights of the Roundtable” at Guilderland. Later in life we enjoyed spending time together goose/duck hunting and occasionally deer hunting. Waterfowl hunters create a unique bond, which is something we definitely had together. You have always been a great friend and a mentor to me. Rest In Peace my dear friend, I’ll see you on the other side.

Meeting Russ was like meeting an old friend that we didn’t know we had just yet. He made my husband and myself feel like family at the “crick” property. He shared enjoyable Polish vodka and yummy deer sausage with us which made our visit even more memorable. We loved his carefreeness and most of all his laugh and smile. To us Russ was more than a friend he was family.

We lost the “Best of the Best “friends. Russ had a kind and caring heart. We have been together through thick and thin in good times and bad. A blessing to have each other. So many memories of times together. He will be missed by many. We loved him and truly appreciated his friendship. Rest in peace!
