Obituary of Donald Riedel

On Wednesday April 5, 2023, Don Riedel was welcomed into Heaven after 100 years on this Earth. He passed at his home in Tierra Verde, FL, with his family.

Don was born March 8, 1923, to Frank and Frances Mountner Riedel in Rome, NY. He married Doris Storey Riedel February, 24, 1945.

He is predeceased by his most cherished wife of 68 years and two brothers, Richard and Ray Riedel.

He is survived by his son, Jim Riedel (Marie) of Tierra Verde, FL, and Old Forge, NY; two daughters, Carol McPhillips of Tonawanda, NY, and Anne Seed of Leominster, MA; a brother, Wayne Riedel; a sister, Susan McDaniels; five grandchildren, Jennifer Riedel Kitt (Andy) of San Carlos, CA, Michelle Riedel Gallagher (Dennis) of Safety Harbor, FL, Christopher McPhillips (Beth) of Williamsville, NY, Kate Torre (Jay) of Lockport, NY, and Peter McPhillips of Kenmore, NY; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Don served in the United States Army with the first Occupation of Japan. He spent many happy years working in his family business of Riedel Dairy. He was Route Manager at the dairy until his retirement in 1957. Don and his wife, Doris, then joined his father-in-law in the insurance business. Together they ran Riedel and Storey Insurance Agency. He became Secretary and Treasurer of Westmoreland Insurance and a member of the Board of Directors of North Country Co-op Insurance in Watertown, NY.

He enjoyed meeting people, music, cars, good food, photography, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing with friends. Some of his happiest times were spent in his mountain home in Eagle Bay, NY, with family and friends.

Don was a man with a deep faith. He lived his faith every day. He was a wise man. His words of wisdom will be treasured by all who were graced to know him.

A Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Don’s memory to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, St. Petersburg, FL.
