Obituary of Howie Mata
Chief Master Sergeant Francis H. “Howie” Mata, USAF, Retired, 77, of Rome, passed away on March 27, 2023. He was born in Honolulu, HI and adopted by his late grandmother and step-grandfather, Paula & Venancio Mata.
Howie served 30 years in the United States Air Force, culminating his career as the Group Superintendent of Aircraft Maintenance. In addition, he worked as the Operations Manager for the 394 Hangar Rd. Corporation in Rome, NY.
Howie was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Mohawk Valley Chiefs Group, Tuesday night cards group, and many other local clubs. He enjoyed and participated in all sports, especially golf, bowling, and softball.
Howie’s family includes his wife, Valerie (Frasca), and they shared forty-four loving years along with their two children, Steven (Stacey) Mata and Stephanie (Dan) Mata Mercado. Paula (Jim) Hamilton and Robert Mata, from a previous marriage. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sister, Estrella (Per) Solem; in-laws, Ernie and Marie Frasca, sister-in-law, Karen (Sam) Serrano, and brother-in-laws, Phil Frasca and Mark Frasca.
Howie leaves behind his beloved pet cat, Roland. He is also predeceased by his loyal dog, Rocky. Howie cared for the protection of animals, especially the neglected.
Funeral services will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 12 at 12:00pm at St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with Father Paul Angelicchio officiating. Calling hours are Tuesday, April 11 from 4:00-6:00pm at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St. Rome, NY, 13440. All are welcome to attend.
