Obituary of Samuel F. Smith

Samuel F. Smith went to be with his wife on April 19, 2022 with loved ones by his side. He was born February 20, 1942, in Camden, to Frederick and Elsie Smith. On November 14, 1961, he married Pauline Marshall in Camden while in service to the United States Air Force. They lived in Alabama before returning to New York to raise their family.
As a child Sam worked on the Magee Farm and the Ed and Nellie Durgee Farm. Besides serving his country, he was the caretaker of Hillside Cemetery for 41 years and worked at Bryant Core Sands, the Rochester Shoe Tree, Westdale Canning Factory, Camden Central School, Laribee Wire, Spargo Wire, Omega Wire, Camden Wire, Camden Collision, Victory Motors, as well as running his own farm and starting his own business, Sam’s Used Cars, in 1987.
Sam believed in working hard and often held to 2-3 jobs at any one time. Sam was a judge for local car shows, raced stock cars and he started Sam Smith’s Car Cruise at Bliss Environmental in 2020.
Sam was a member of the Camden Masonic Lodge 476 and the Grange.
He enjoyed helping out on his son-in-law’s farm, helping out friends and donating to local charities. He enjoyed auctions, visiting with friends at Byrne Dairy and McDonald’s, and working on cars.
Sam leaves daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Todd Yager, Rebecca and Michael Hopler and Amy and Jim Mulvaney; sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel and Caroline Smith and John and Melissa Smith; “daughter”, Stephanie Allen; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emily and Dorothy, and brothers, Art and Robert and their wives; sisters-in-law, and brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Pauline; a son Harry; sisters Marie, Betty and Margaret; and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 21st, at 11:00 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery on Steam Mill Road in Camden. There are no calling hours.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 9464 State Rt., Camden.
