Obituary:Frederick J. "Shanghi" Nisiewicz, 83, of Rome, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, in Betsy Ross Rehabilitation Center. He was born on October 3, 1924, in Rome, the son of Metro and Mary Rhemick Nisiewicz. He attended Rome Schools. On September 27, 1952, he married Antoinette Blatcher in Binghamton, NY. She died on April 23, 1997.
He was employed by Rome Cable Corporation for forty-two years, retiring in 1984. Upon retirement, he was a crossing guard for Rome City School District for several years. Shanghi proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre as a Tech Five and Field Lineman from 1943-1946. He was stationed out of Fort Dixon, New Jersey.
He was a member and usher of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church. Shanghi was a member of the Frank J. Stecko Post, the Henry P. Smith American Legion, and the Polish Home. He was also a baseball umpire in the Rome area for several years. Shanghi was the scoreboard operator for Rome Free Academy Football for over forty years.
Surviving is one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Stephen Smith, Camden; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bruce and Lisa Nisiewicz, Beverly Hills, FL, Jeffrey and Patricia Nisiewicz, Rome, Kevin and Terri Nisiewicz, Whitesboro, and David Nisiewicz, Rome; one sister, Helen Prevo, Rome; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews. Shanghi was predeceased by three brothers, Stanley, John, and Frank; and three sisters, Stella, Mary Nisiewicz, and Anna.
Shanghi's family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Betsy Ross, especially Wing 2, for all of their kindness and compassion shown to him.
Funeral services will be held at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Friday, December 14, 2007, at 9:15 AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
