Obituary of Sam Schilling

Sanford P. “Sam” Schilling, II, 79, of Sherrill, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021. He was born in Rome on May 31, 1942, a son of the late Sanford P. and Gladys (Sobolewski) Schilling. He was a 1959 graduate of Rome Free Academy and went on to work over 33 years for Niagara Mohawk. Sam was a member of the Rome Polish Home and the Harness Horseman’s Association of CNY for many years. He frequented Vernon Downs regularly and campaigned the great trotter Gotham Hanover. He was also a frequent flyer at Flo’s Diner. Sam is survived by two children, Tracey Schilling and Paul Schilling (Betty); two brothers, Donald Schilling (Mary Ellen) and Bruce Schilling (Marilyn); one grandson, Joshua Schilling; four step-children, Amy Hillenbrand (Jim), Lori Trudeau (Kevin), Beth Dhayer and Edward Domser (Tanya); nine step-grandchildren, Brian and Steven Jones, Jamie Trudeau, Thomas and Elexis Domser and Ivy, Leah, Adrienne and Sloane Jones; a great-grandson, Zachary; two Goddaughters, Debra Schilling and Beth Anne Ferracane; a great-aunt, Minna Schilling Corona; and several nieces, nephews and several special friends. He was predeceased by his longtime companion, Mable Domser. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place in Glenwood Cemetery.
