Obituary:Edmund E. "Ned" DeFrees, 70, of 722 W. Embargo St., Rome, died on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, in Rome Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born on April 24, 1937, in Oneida, the son of Darrel and Clara Maciag DeFrees. Ned was a graduate of Westmoreland High School. On December 6, 1963, he married Viola J. Carter Rudd. She died on November 3, 1995. Ned later remarried Louise (Sanford) Foote Bottrell on March 12, 1999.
Ned was employed by Rome Strip Steel. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and, later, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church.
Surviving besides his loving wife, Louise; are a daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Michael Hallock, Camden; four step-daughters, Jeanne Rudd Stone, Rome, Deborah Lysejko, Blossvale, and Mary Louise Bustamante, Blythe, CA; five step sons, Glenn and Fannie Rudd, Rome, Kit and Diane Rudd, Hendersonville, NC, Russell Foote, Timothy and Paula Foote, and Gary and Geraldine Foote, all of Rome; a brother and sister-in-law, Adelbert and Dee DeFrees, Westmoreland; twenty-seven grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren. Ned was predeceased by a brother, Bruce DeFrees, on December 28, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St, Rome, at 10:15 AM on Friday, November 16, 2007, and a Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Peter's Church at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Contributions may be made in Ned's memory to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box, 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.
