Edwin Wancewicz, 85, of N. Madison St., Rome, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at St. Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford. He was born on September 7, 1936, in Amsterdam, NY, the son of Michael and Frances Jendzezczak Wancewicz. He was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. On July 6, 1979, Edwin was united in marriage to Mary Oberriter in St. Paul’s Church in Rome. Edwin proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. He retired from the USAF after serving his country for twenty years and twelve days. Edwin went on to be a mechanic for Northrup Aviation for many years, retiring in 1990. He was also a mentor at GLDC and was affectionately known as “Square”. Surviving besides his wife, Mary; are his children, Edwin J. “Jay” Wancewicz, Sr., of Pineville, LA, and Vivian (Carla) Hughes-Wancewicz, of Lafayette, LA; a grandson, Edwin J. (Amanda) Wancewicz, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Presley Blayke Wancewicz and Easton Joseph Wancewicz; two sisters, Rosalie Buonome, of Schenectady, and Joyce Knapik, of Amsterdam; and several nieces and nephews. Edwin was predeceased by a stepson, Stephen C. Kaiser; and two brothers, Chester and Michael. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021, at 10:00 AM at St. Volodymyr Urkrainian Catholic Church, 4 Cottage Place, Utica. Interment with Military Honors will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Rome. Family and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N.
