Obituary of Margaret J. Barone

Margaret Joy (Anderson) Barone was a devoted wife, loving mother, adored grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, niece and caring friend. Through the beckoning of God’s light and in the presence of her family, Margaret moved on to eternal rest September 22, 2021 after battling a sudden illness. Her dedication to family, compassion for humanity, love of nature, fervor for books and the arts, sense of humor, and selflessness live on in her memory. Margaret is survived by her devoted husband, Martin W. Barone of Bernhards Bay, NY; beloved children: Matthew (Gérard Benoît) Barone of Dummerston, VT and Amy (Peter Hall) Barone of Fayetteville, NY; grandchildren: Scarlett, Chetwhyn, Divina (Barone Phillips) and Marek and Lucie Joy (Barone-Benoît); step-sister Barbara (Dirk) Ringers of Charlottesville, VA; and many more special family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy (Tuttle) and Robert Anderson II, brother Robert (Anderson), grandparents, aunts and uncles. Margaret was born in Syracuse, NY on September 6, 1950. After graduating from Chittenango High School in 1968 she enrolled at SUNY Geneseo following her passion for dance. She was cast in numerous theatrical performances at the college such as “Gittel Mosca” in William Gibson’s Two For the Seesaw and Eugène Ionesco’s The Lesson. She ultimately graduated from SUNY Oswego with a B.A. degree in English and French. Margaret married Martin W. Barone on October 28, 1972. They spent much of their time raising two children and owning/operating a small Italian-American restaurant, Mario & Anne’s, in Bernhard’s Bay for nearly 13 years. Following her interest in higher education, she began a new chapter in 1990 joining staff at Syracuse University in the Math department. In her retirement, Margaret enjoyed spending time with family on Seventh Lake in the Adirondacks, a love of gardening, cooking, music, dancing, reading, traveling domestically and internationally to places like Boston, Quebec, Ireland, and Italy. Among many other endearing qualities, most will always remember her infectious laugh. Margaret exuded the fullness of life by giving selflessly to others. Her compassion for family and friends, desire for joy and happiness in the ordinariness of everyday life set her apart from many. She was a soul full of hope, always willing to offer an intellectual and empathetic perspective on life concerns. People were drawn to her for her calm demeanor, acute intellect and peaceful presence. Family and friends are invited to calling hours at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, 9464 State Route 13 (Harden Blvd.) Camden, NY on Friday, October 1, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with services following at the same location.
