Richard P. “Shaky” Martin, 89, of Rome, passed away on Thursday. February 18, 2021, at the Abraham House in Rome. He was born in Ossining, NY, on March 16, 1931. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. On July 30, 1953, he was united in marriage to Ann “Nancy” Phelan and raised five children. She passed away September 26, 1978. Richard went on to marry Deanne Cable on February 19, 1986. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Shaky worked for the US Postal Service for 20 years. After retiring from USPS, he became a greenskeeper at Shamrock Golf Course for 18 years. Shaky was an excellent athlete in both high school and college. He ran track against Roger Bannister and played basketball with George Mikan at DePaul. Shaky was a lifetime member of the Rome VFW, HP Smith Post American Legion and Shamrock Golf Course. Surviving besides his loving wife, Deanne, is one daughter, Mary “Missy” Formikell (Mike); four sons, Richard (Tatiana), Michael (Deborah), Timothy (Theresa) and Kevin (Peggy) Martin; a stepson, David Marcelletta (Elizabeth); thirteen grandchildren, including his “favorite” Maddy, and three great-grandchildren; a godchild, Ginny; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Carrado (Mario). He was predeceased by a stepson, Todd Marcelletta; one sister, Barbara, two brothers, Roger and Bill; and his beloved dog, Kimmy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 24th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Abraham House of Rome, 417 N. Washington St., Rome, NY 3440. Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome.
