Richard P. Gromelski, 84, of Rome, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Rome Memorial Hospital. Born in Rome on December 13, 1936, he was a son of the late Alexander and Mary (Parznich) Gromelski. On February 4, 1961, he was united in marriage to the late Sophia Boiko. Richard was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served his country from 1954-57. Upon being honorably discharged, he went to work at Rome Strip Steel until his retirement in 1995 after 38 years. He was a communicant of Transfiguration Church and a member of the Rome Polish Home. He enjoyed being outside at home, tending to his garden and taking meticulous care of his lawn. Richard is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Kay and Dwayne Metott, Lynn and Salvatore Campese, Kimberly and Teddy Marsden, and Jennifer and Carmelo Emmanuele; eight grandchildren, Jensen, Ryan, Cassidy and Aleksander Metott, Matthew (Caitlyn) Piatkowski, Stephanie (Joshua) Collins, and Josephine and Carmelo A. Emmanuele; two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Ethan; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Sophia in 2009: a daughter, Karen Sue; a grandson, Derek Metott; a great-grandson, Logan Metott; five sisters, Anna Roman, Laura Lachut, Regina Myslinski, Helen Blockston and Gladys Harris; and three brothers, Stanley Drisgula, Joseph Drisgula and Raymond Gromelski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Transfiguration Church. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., on Wednesday, January 13th from 4-7:00 p.m. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a limited number of guests will be allowed to enter the funeral home at one time, everyone must wear a face covering upon entering and proper social distancing protocols must be adhered to once inside. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Richard’s memory to the Transfiguration Church Memorial Fund.
