Name: Elsie Rhein Newlove Date of Death: Sunday, March 16, 2008 Residence: Rome, New York Age: 100 Obituary: Elsie Rhein Newlove, 100, of Rome, formerly of Acacia Village in Utica, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 1908, in Stonehedge Nursing Home. She was born on February 17, 2008, in Dunkirk, NY, the daughter of Peter and Hulda Carlson. Elsie was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1926, and the Fredonia Normal School, Class of 1929. On August 17, 1935, she was united in marriage to Charles C. Rhein in Schenectady. Mr. Rhein passed away on July 18, 1964. On February 10, 1973, she was united in marriage to Bert H. Newlove in Utica. Mr. Newlove passed away on February 5, 1977. Elsie started as a teacher in Schenectady. She later taught in Rome City School District. She retired from teaching in 1972 as a remedial reading teacher in Wappingers Falls. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Elsie was a member of the Wednesday Morning Club, Birch Twig, and she was an avid bridge player. Elsie's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Stonehedge Nursing Home, Wing 1 for their kindness and compassion where she recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and James Kehoe, Rome; a step-son, Herbert Newlove, Saratoga Springs; two grandchildren, Holly and Joel Amidon, II, and Christopher and Susan Kehoe; five great-grandchildren, Joel Rhein and Paige Amidon, twins Meredith and Emily, and CJ Kehoe; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Elsie was predeceased by one sister, Ragnhilde Schultz; and three brothers, Gunnar, Franklyn, and Kenneth Carlson. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 11:00AM. Interment will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made in Elsie's memory to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413.
