Name: Helena Alfreda Stein Slaga Date of Death: Saturday, January 19, 2008 Residence: Rome, NY Age: 77 Obituary:Francis Slaga is saddened to announce that his beloved spouse of fifty years has been summoned to heaven. Helena's selfless devotion to her family was a beautiful manifestation of her love. During a recent life-threatening illness to her beloved husband, she never left his bedside during thirty-seven days of his hospitalization. She was determined that he would not die alone. As a result of her love and unbelievable self-sacrifice, he miraculously improved and returned home with her. One of Francis's nurses tearfully stated to Helena, "You have restored my faith in human-kind." Helena Alfreda "Leni" Stein was born in Germany on January 30, 1930. At the age of 21, she came to live with her Aunt in Whitesboro. She met her soul-mate, Francis Slaga, and they married in Transfiguration Church in Rome on March 23, 1957. She was very proud of her husband and their four sons; James Francis and his wife, Vicky, of Floyd, Ronald Peter and his wife, Lisa, of Clark Mills, Jeffrey Paul and his wife, Carri, of East Greenbush, and Mark Andrew, of Rome. She had eight grandchildren. Surviving in Tuttlingen, Germany, are two brothers, Eugene and Heinrich, and a sister, Ida. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on January 22, 2008, at 11:30 AM at Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church in Rome. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome.
