Obituary:Peter J. Hackert, 80, of Lynwood St., Rome, died January 16, 2008. He was born on July 7, 1927, in White Plains, NY, the son of Frederick H. and Frances Calhoun Hackert. He graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School in Elmsford, NY, as Salutatorian of his class, and enlisted in the US Army in 1944. During World War II he served 2 years of active duty, including service in the European Theater. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, and an ROTC commission in the US Air Force. He then served two years active duty during the Korean Conflict. Peter worked at RADC at Griffiss AFB in Rome for thirty-five years and he retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lt. Colonel in 1987.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bette and Randy Van Derzee of Trumansburg, NY, and Suzanne and Michael Ralbovsky of Saratoga Springs, NY, and one son, Richard D. Hackert of Clinton. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Zilda, and a son, Peter J. Hackert, Jr. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., on Sunday, January 20, 2007, at 2:00 PM. A Spring interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call from 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in Peter's memory to the American Cancer Society.
