Obituary:Major Kenneth W. Kahl, US Army Retired, finally after a twenty-five year wait, joined his beloved wife Mary, the mother of his children in eternal rest. Major Kahl passed away on August 7, 2007 at age 86 at home in Taberg, New York after a long illness. He was born October 24, 1920 in Brooklyn the son of Walter and Evelyn Decker Kahl. He was a graduate of Brooklyn schools.
Ken was a voracious reader and inquiring student who attended several community colleges and four year colleges , including Wisconsin, Maryland and Northwestern.
On December 6, 1942 he married Mary Phelps in Brooklyn. She died in 1981.
Major Kahl was employed by the Department of Defense at Griffiss Air Force Base for over twenty years retiring in 1982. He was a Police Instructor with the DO D Police, Air Force Reserves and the National Guard. After his retirement he operated a family owned hardwood tree farm.
Major Kahl was a twenty year veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II in the European Theatre and Korean Conflict.
He was an Olympic level swimmer and was involved as Ocean Surf Guard, Red Cross Volunteer Examiner and Water Safety Instructor for mentally and physically challenged children and adults.
Major Kahl was active for over twenty-five years in YMCA and Boy Scouts programs including Seven years as Scoutmaster of Camden Troop 20.
Ken enjoyed frequent camping, hunting trip and tours.
He was a life member of the NRA Military Officers Assoc., Camden VFW, Meeker O'Rourke American Legion Post 1309 Taberg, a Charter member of the Provost Marshall Guild, a former contributing member of the International Association of Police Chiefs.
He is survived by two daughters and sons -in-law, Kathleen and Lawrence Snow, Taberg; Ellen And Patrick Burns, Cleveland, New York; five sons and daughters -in-law, Patrick and Trish Kahl, Oriskany; Michael and Belinda Kahl, Taberg; Timothy Kahl and special friend, Rosa, Oriskany; Kevin and Mary Jo Kahl, North Syracuse and Keith and Tina Kahl, Taberg; one sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Robert Turczany, Clearwater, Florida; eleven grandchildren, Kevin, Lori, Matt, Chris, James, Anne, Elizabeth, Andrew , Kenneth, Scott, Stephen and three great-grandchildren, Jake, Nick and Ethan.
Services: Friends may call at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome, Thursday 6:00P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Contributions may be made in Ken's name to the Boy Scouts of America.
