Obituary:Leona R. Bednarz, 88, of Rome, died Saturday, November 24, 2007, in Rome Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born January 12, 1919, in Rome, the daughter of Floyd and Sally Walus Bednarz. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Class of 1936.
Leona worked at Rome Manufacturing for 38 years, retiring in 1984. She previously worked at Rome Tourney Radiator, and during World War II she worked at the Rome Air Depot.
Ms. Bednarz was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was an 18-year volunteer at the Rome Historical Society and a 35-year member of McConnellsville Country Club. She also belonged to the Ava Dorfmann Senior Center, the Rome Art and Community Center, and AARP.
Leona is survived by three nieces, Kathleen Quinlan and Sheila Quinlan, both of Homer, and Martha and William Poole, of Cortland; two nephews, Thomas and Linda Quinlan, of Cortland, and Daniel and Linda Quinlan, of Homer; two special cousins, Chester and Joseph Bochnak, both of Lee Center; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. A sister, Victoria Quinlan, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 27th at 11:30 AM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, and 12:00 PM at St. Mary's Church. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions in Leona's memory may be made to the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Hospice and Palliative Care, or the St. Mary's Church Memorial Fund.
