"Rob" Smith, 33, of 611 Broadway, Mechanicville, formerly of Rome, died on Monday, October 1, 2007, at his parent's residence in Rome, following a long illness. He was born on December 4, 1973,into the Smith family, in Rome, the son of Garry and Connie Smith Thaler. He proudly graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1993. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Albany in 1997 and his Master's degree in 2001. Rob was especially proud of this because he was the first person in his family to accomplish these events. On January 22, 2000, he married Margaret "Meg" Lowden in Watervliet, NY. Rob was a Special Education Teacher and a passionate football coach for the South Glens Falls School District. Rob was a loving father, husband, son, brother, grandson, and friend. He was a man who lost a long fight with a disease that he refused to let change his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Meg; his parents, Garry and Connie; his daughter, Hannah Rose Smith; his son, Lowden Lane Smith; a sister, Lisa Jordan of Rome; his maternal grandfather, James Smith of Rome; two step-sisters, Amanda Thaler of Westmoreland and Jessica Thaler of Utica; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Rob was predeceased by his beloved maternal grandmother, Barbara Smith, in 2000. Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at 9:15 AM and a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Contributions may be made in Rob's memory to Hospice and Palliative Care, Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY, 13413.
