Obituary: Mary A. Cook, 93, of Colonial Apartments, Rome, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at Rome Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born on September 14, 1915, in Taberg, the daughter of George and Mary Willson Spink. Mary attended Rome schools. On July 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to D. Stanley Cook, Sr., in Rome. Mr. Cook passed away on October 14, 1981.
Mary loved to be surrounded by her family and friends. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was active with their Golden Years Group. She was dedicated to serving others, as the former Chairwoman of the Kitchen at the church she prepared meals for the church functions for many years, and participated in their bakery project. Mary was a member, treasurer, and past Noble Grand of the Queen Esther Rebekah Lodge. She was also past New York State Association President of the Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant, and was a member and treasurer of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary. She served as the advisor of the Theta Rho Girls Club and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for several years.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Nicholas Bartolotti, of Camden; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kim Cook, of Rome; a sister, Rosalie and Richard Gaudrault, of Battle Creek, Michigan; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary was predeceased by three sisters, Mabel Schmitt, Ada Urbanski, and Grace Jones; and three brothers, George H. Spink, Sr., J. Wesley Spink, and Harvey W. Spink.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, 400 N. George St., Rome, at 10:00 AM where the Rev. Dora Schneider will officiate. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
