Serra, 65 of Rome, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a long illness. She was born June 19, 1940, in Wheeling, WV, the daughter of Frank and Martha Milligan Ryder. She was educated in Wheeling schools. On September 26, 1959, she married Thomas (Tom) Serra, Jr. in Rome. Joan was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Rome and was very active in the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, serving as the assistant treasurer. Surviving besides her husband, are two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Serra, Rome, and Tina and Matthew Lennon, Rome; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas, Raleigh, NC, David and Karen, Holland Patent, and James, Rochester, NY; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jane Givens, Wheeling, WV, Sandra and Tim Berlenge, Vero Beach, FL, Marlene Ryder, Juneann Ryder, Irene McCarthy, and Cathy and Joby Thomas, all of Wheeling, WV; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Ryder, John and Pam Ryder, and James and Linda Ryder, all of Wheeling, WV; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Alexander, Cody, Jordan, Chase, Gabrielle, Trevor, Bradley, and Jonathan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11am at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Interment will take place in Floyd Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-7pm. Contributions in Joan's memory may be made to the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department.
