Name: James G. "Jimmy" Colangelo Date of Death: Monday, August 18, 2008 Residence: Rome, New York Age: 83 Obituary: James G. (Jimmy) Colangelo, 83, of Rome, New York, died Monday, August 18, 2008, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. He was born August 23, 1924, in Rome, the son of Joseph and Domenica "Mamie" Mariani Colangelo. Mr. Colangelo was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, the Class of 1942. On June 16, 1951, he married Yolanda Barone in St. John the Baptist Church. She died October 10, 1975. He later married Joan Riegler on July 19, 1997, in Saratoga Springs by Jimmy's dearest friend, the Honorable Larry LaBelle. Jimmy owned and operated Rome's oldest restaurant, The Plaza, established in 1907, since 1951. He loved being at the restaurant and catering to his customers. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Colangelo was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. He owned racehorses on his own and with his brother for several years at Vernon Downs, and currently owned a thoroughbred with his nephew, Billy. Jim loved to travel. He especially loved going to the races at Saratoga, vacationing in Palm Springs, CA, and spending the winter among friends in Naples, FL. Surviving besides his loving wife; are two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Mark Gilbert, of Rome, Jean and Michael Madigan, of Fairport; four cherished grandchildren, Mark Gilbert, Jr., David Gilbert, James Daily, and Laura Daily; three nieces, Kay Dibble, of Endicott, Karen Colangelo, of New Jersey, Jill and Dante Ross, of Pennsylvania; two nephews, William Colangelo, of Vienna, Virginia, Todd Williamson, of West Leyden; in addition, he is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Sophie Riegler, of Ava; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Charles Williamson, of West Leyden and Kathy and David Thomann, of Rome. He was predeceased by his brother, William. Jimmy's family wishes to express their heartfelt thank you and appreciation to Rome Memorial Hospital ICU, Dr. Kesava Potluri, Dr. Amjad Rashid and Dr. Emile Wassel for the wonderful care and compassion shown to him during his illness. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 22, 2008, at 9:45 A.M. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome and at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:30A.M. Interment St. John's Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4:00P.M. to 7:00P.M.
