Obituary:Helen I. Barker, age 89, of Camden, died peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2008 at Valley Health Services in Herkimer, NY. Helen was born in Osceola, NY on November 11, 1919, the daughter of James H. Barker, Sr. and Kathleen M. (Grace) Barker. She attended the State University of New York at Oswego and Utica College. Helen was Executive Secretary of the Rome Women's Community Club from 1947 to 1966. She then worked at the Rome Savings Bank for 21 years before her retirement in 1987. She was a longtime parishioner of St. John's R.C. Church in Camden.
Surviving are her nephews, Laurence J. Barker and his wife Mary L. of New Hartford, NY, Donald W. Barker and his wife Mary H. of Camden, NY; nieces Kathleen L. Mettot and her husband Dennis of Titusville, Fl., and Karen L. Barker and her husband Raphael Lasar of Matawan, NJ, eleven grandnieces and nephews, Pamela Nixson, Michael, Lauren, Brian, Alaina, and Kevin Barker, Olivia, Gabrielle, Vivian, and Caleb Mettot, and Emma Barker-Lasar, as well as three great grandnieces Natalie and Paige Nixson and Caroline Barker. She also leaves special friends Shirley and Leo Ludwin, Carol and James Finnerty, Clarence and Patricia Hawkes, and Jackie and Allen Mutch.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, brothers James, Jr. and William and her sisters-in-law Lauretta Dunn Barker and Arlene Bird Barker.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Valley Health Services but especially to those on 1 West for the care and friendship given to Helen throughout her stay.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11am at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 9464 State Rt. 13, Camden, and 11:30am St. John's Church, Camden. Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Camden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 9am-11am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Valley Health Services, St. Mary's Church of Florence, NY, or the Rome Humane Society.
