Hernandez, 69, of 202 Expense St., Rome, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009, at Rome Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She was born on August 2, 1939, in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Leonides and Christina Matos Gorritz. She attended schools in Puerto Rico. On December 24, 1955, she was united in marriage to Juan Hernandez in Cidra, Puetro Rico. Surviving besides her loving husband of fifty-three years, Juan; are two daughters, Elizabeth Hernandez and her significant other, Jerry Torres, Jeannie Hernandez-Butler and her husband, Jerry Butler; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Edward and Sherry Hernandez, Larry Hernandez and his significant other, Yaritza Vargas, Esteban and Ivette Hernandez, and Alfredo and Nilsa Hernandez, all of Rome; three sisters, Zoraida, Magda, and Jenny, all of Puerto Rico; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Maria was predeceased by a son, Miguel A. Hernandez, on July 2, 1995; a grandson, Daniel Hernandez, on March 8, 2008; two brothers, and one sister. Services: Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St. Rome, at 8:00 PM. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery.
