Name: Stanley E. Witek Date of Death: Tuesday, December 30, 2008 Residence: Rome, New York Age: 86 Obituary:Stanley E. Witek, 86, of Rome, passed away December 30, 2008 at home with his family, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on December 22, 1922, son of Woycieck and Aniela Karkula Witek. He graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1940. On May 24, 1952 he was united in marriage to Florence F. Brach in St. Joseph's Church, Boonville, N.Y. He was employed by Canterbury Press for 33 years as an offset lithographic pressman, retiring November, 1985. He also worked for General Cable until 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, January 1943, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a flight engineer, and turret gunner on a B-24. He flew over 40 missions, and was awarded the Flying Cross medal, along with six Oak Leaf Clusters. A Veteran of WW II, he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant, receiving a honorable discharge in 1945. He was a life member of the 11th bomb group. He was a member of Transfiguration Church, the United Polish League, National Rifle Association, Little Roaring Brook Fish and Game Club, Rome Polish Home, Ronnie Smith Fan Club and Golf Knowles. He enjoyed the great outdoors, traveling, hunting, fishing, golfing and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife, Florence, a daughter Susan A. McLoughlin, and her husband, Robert, of Rome, a son Edward S. Witek, of Holland Patent and two special grandchildren, Julie A. and Kellie L. McLoughlin, five sisters, Stella Metcalf and Helen Piekarski, both of Vero Beach, Fl, Jean Butkiewicz, Brookings, South Dakota, Frances Rembisz, Town of Lee and Stefane (Sally) Bunal of Rome. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter and a sister Rose Puglio. The family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. for their excellent care. Services: Funeral service will be held Friday 9:45A.M. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome and a mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30AM at Transfiguration Church. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be 4:00P.M. to 7:00P.M. Thursday.
