Obituary of Michael J. Hammon
Michael J. Hammon, 48, of Rome, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024, due to undiagnosed health complications. He was born in Rome on July 19, 1976, to Butch and Tina (Heburn) Hammon, four minutes before his younger twin brother, Todd. He graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1995 and went on to Monroe County Community College and the University of South Carolina at Aiken, where he majored in playing baseball and was scouted by the Atlanta Braves and NY Mets.
Mike was one of Rome’s greatest athletes starting his athletic career in Rome National Little League and Fran Allison Basketball. He went on to star for the Black Knights in football, basketball and baseball and Lee Legion baseball, setting records and earning All-Star selections.
He ran his own contracting business, Mike’s Tile and Home Improvement for many years. Mike was a member of the Galliano Club, played in the World Series of Bocce for many years, and was a member of the Pat Hickey-Tony Mancuso Memorial Golf League for over 20 years with his partner and fellow NY Mets die-hard fan, Steve Berthold.
Mike is survived by his parents, Tina Heburn and Butch Hammon; three children, Keegan Hammon, Trent Hammon and Lillian Hammon; two sisters, Melanie Coonrod (Jeff) and Tasha Hammon (Scott Merchant); twin brother, Todd Hammon; the mother of his children, Sunshine Hammon; several aunts and uncles, including special aunt and uncle, Trudy and Jerry Piersall; several friends including, Pete and Jason Jaegers, Chris Jackson and family, Chad Plantz, Dave Merchant, AJ and Joanne Renzi, Aqo and Amanda Kolasz and David and Michelle Mincozzi, and many, many more; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St.., Rome NY 13440, on Wednesday, November 27th from 4-7:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 7:00 p.m.
