Obituary of Joan B. Herr
Joan Bye Herr, 84, of Rome, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Wynn Hospital in Utica. Born in Raleigh, NC, on November 22, 1939, she was a daughter of the late George and Joan (Mahoney) Bye. She was a graduate of Harrisburg (PA) Catholic High School, Class of 1957, and Mount Aloysius College. On August 15, 1960, Ed Herr spotted Joan during communion at Sunday Mass. He asked her out after Mass and they were married two years later, May 19, 1962, in Good Shephard Church in Camp Hill, PA.
Joan held several part-time office manager positions prior to entering the real estate business as a licensed agent.
Joan had a deep, passionate love for our Lord, and served Him in many ways. She was a devout Catholic and daily communicant at St. Paul’s Church, served on the parish council and was active in social ministry and prayer group. She was an active volunteer in her church and community. Joan was a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club and Officer’s Wives Club at Griffiss Air Force Base and several other bases. She was truly the definition of an Officer’s wife as she cheerfully “held down the fort” during her husband’s multiple military deployments.
Joan had an exuberant personality and love of life, especially for her family. She lit up every room she entered, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was the life of every party. She was warm, caring and very generous, always there for someone in need.
Surviving besides her loving husband of 62 years, Ed, are two daughters, Maureen Marks and Joanne Lieske (Brooks); a son, Edwin Herr Jr. (Christine); two sisters, Susan Jones (David) and Katy Bradfield (Craig); four beloved grandchildren, Dustin and Lauren Lieske and Edwin Joseph and Sarah Herr; one precious great-grandson, Baker; and several cherished nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, NY 13440, on Saturday, October 19th from 2-4:00 p.m. . A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 21st at St. Paul’s Church. Interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery.
