David A. Schober, 71, a.k.a. Pop Pop of Rome, NY, passed away like a true “Fightin Philon Thursday, August 8, 2024 at WYNN Hospital in Utica, NY. He was born in Woodbury, New Jersey on March 21, 1953, a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Cogan) Schober, Jr. He grew up in the Pitman-Glassboro area playing and working on the family apple farm early on to then excelling in the sports he loved of Football, Baseball, and Track. After graduating at Pitman High School in June 1971, Dave enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 27, 1971. He proudly served his country as a Load Crew Member, Munitions Specialist and was Honorably Discharged on January 11, 1974, at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. 

 

Dave Settled in Rome and continued to work at Griffiss Air Base as a Civilian for many years. He also bartended at JJ’s Bar in Rome for over 20 years where many friends were made and lasting for the next 50 years. He then began a career with the NYS Department of Labor in Utica eventually retiring. He ended his hard-working ethic with his carpentry business as a Handyman passionately working for many people in the Central NY area for many years finally shifting his drive in life to Golfing all around the New York Area with special friends, memories, and laughs made along the way never letting anyone forget his famous “Eagle” hole! He was a member of the American-Ukrainian Veterans Club and active member of the Rome D.A.V. where he served as Senior Vice Commander Chapter 20.  

 

Our dad was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Villanova. That passion was shared with his children and grandsons creating a special bond by always talking and texting during games over the years with many laughs and some tears. His proudest moments were Coaching his children and area youth in Football, Softball, and Baseball for many years to eventually watching and giving advice to his 4 grandsons playing various sports and watching them grow leaving him with a smile lasting forever. 

 

Dave is survived by a daughter, Monica Schober; two sons, Todd Schober (Hayley) and Jon Schober (Stephanie); four grandsons, Ashton, Gavin, Dylan, and Parker; nephews Billy and Brian McCrae; special friends Gene and Debbie Bilodeau, Dave Jennings, Rennie Loson, and so many more over the past 50 years in Rome. He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy McCrae.
