Obituary of Matthew L. Miller
Matthew Leonard Miller, 63, of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 4, 2024, following a brief illness.
Matt was born in Dearborn, MI to John W. Miller and Jean M. (Curran) Miller on July 26, 1961. Upon moving to NY, Matt attended Shenedehowa Central Schools in Clifton Park, NY. For the past 32 years Matt has served as the Executive Director of Rome Rescue Mission in Rome, serving the needs of residents in the city he adopted as home. His work there was more than a job; it was his mission and passion. Matt was a protector of the innocent, a light in the darkness, a hand reaching out in love and kindness to those in need. It was his greatest desire to be unemployed for then he would know that the needs of every person had been met and his work was done. Matt received multiple awards and accolades for his work, but it was his Christian love for people that drove him. When not working Matt could often be found on the golf course, a game he especially enjoyed with his sister, Linda. He loved the simple things in life: a Sunday drive, time with his family, home improvement projects, and puttering around the yard. One of his proudest moments was receiving an official US Patent in January 2024 following 3 years of work on a project. Matt was larger than life, an amazing storyteller, and a good man. Let us find comfort in the knowledge that God welcomed him home with “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
Matt is survived by his best friend and loving partner of 31 years, Amy (Maynard) Miller of Rome; his cherished daughters Isabella Miller, at home, and Hannah Miller (and partner Brent Dewolf) of Vernon, NY; brother David Miller of Loudonville, NY; sisters Linda Miller of Loudonville, NY, Chalice Puzio of Dearborn, MI, and Sandi Miller of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved; and his canine companion, Kiah, who never left his side. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Jean Miller, and beloved nephew, Gabriel Miller.
Memorial donations may be made to Rome Rescue Mission, 413 E. Dominick St., Rome, NY. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Lavesa-Cesana, and Laura Senska, NP, and the entire nursing staff at Upstate Cancer Center in Verona, NY for their compassionate care.
Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, NY 13440, on Thursday, August 15th from 2-4:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m.
