Obituary of Joseph F. Carollo
Joseph (Joey) Francis Carollo III, 77, went to rest on July 30, 2024 while surrounded by his family's love and Hospice’s care after a nearly 24 year long struggle with Parkinson's Disease.
Born in Rome, Joey was the oldest son of Joe & Linda (Fico) Carollo Jr. He graduated from RFA in 1965 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1965-1968, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged from the military, he worked with his father in the snowmobile business - Joe Carollo & Sons Ski-doo for years.
He and the former Rosemary Dauback met while she waitressed at Eddie's Paramount Diner, across the street from his dad's business. They were married a year later on August 24, 1974, a lifelong commitment that didn't quite reach the 110 years they vowed to one another!
Joey was hired at the Rome Fire Department in 1978 - a position he was always thankful for - retiring as a Lieutenant due to illness in 2006. (It lit up his heart to have so many of his Fire Dept brothers stop in to visit recently & to listen to their stories of his glory days with the department! A special Thank You to all who took the time.)
As well as his duties as fireman, because he was always a hard-working man, Joey enjoyed employment at Gillette’s Market in the meat dept/deli making his famous holiday sausage. He also took a position driving one of the department store trucks for Resident Shopper's Service - work and people that he relished.
Among his life’s pleasures were hunting with his dad, nephew Bob & friends, bowling on a Wednesday night league & with his sons and watching innumerable ball games over pizza & wings with his good buddy Dick Marocchi.
Highlights of recent years include traveling to visit his sons, Greg & Evan in Chicago, IL, Largo, FL & Portland, OR, as well as a bucket list road trip with the boys to take in the wonders of the Grand Canyon & Yosemite National Park. On those visits to Florida, he especially enjoyed watching his grandbabygirl, Eve grow! Over the past several years, Joey was pleased to finally find satisfaction in reading mystery novels and accomplishing crossword puzzles! We won’t soon forget the Never-ending games of Rummy!!
He was and we will Always be grateful for the attentive care given to our dear man in his last few months with us by the lovely people of the VA, especially HBPC specialists, Bill Wolffe, Brandy Kirk, Carolyn Jackson, Emily Volz & so many others. They wore their hearts on their sleeves, and we've been blessed to know them.
Joey will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 49 years & 11 months, Rosemary, two beloved sons Gregory of Portland, OR and Evan (Anne) of Largo, FL, one very precious granddaughter, Eve, a special nephew, Bob Carollo, his Very best friend, Dick Marocchi, dear cousins Ron (Fran) Carollo, Janet (Dennis) Stratton, Carrie Caporilli, Francis & Richard Gillette, Rosario (Kathy) Fico & Gaetano (Judy) Fico, and in-laws, Lee (Anna)Dauback, Charlie (Stacy)Dauback, Jeff (Judy)Dauback, Calvin (Crystal) Dauback, Terri Marolf, Jennifer (Vinny)Gobrick, Eva Thompson & Alicia Rocco. The RFD brotherhood & other friends too numerous to mention, were treasures to Joey & he'll surely be remembered warmly.
