Obituary of Clarence R Chester

Clarence R. Chester, Sr., 86, of Rome, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Rome Health Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born on October 29, 1937, in Muskegon, MI, the son of Sarah Greer and Walter Chester.  He was a 1955 graduate of Holton High School in Michigan.

On December 28, 1963, he was united in marriage to Ruth P. Bartlett in Rome.

Upon high school graduation, Clarence proudly enlisted to serve in the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge on August 31, 1975, after a twenty-year career.  While serving in the Air Force, Clarence did two tours in Vietnam and was stationed at a time in Goose Bay Lab in Canada.  After his service, he went on to be a civil engineer for Griffis Air Force Base until his retirement in 1994.

Surviving besides his loving wife, Ruth; are his sons, Clarence R. Chester, Jr., of Rome, Roger Chester, of GA, Wayne Hines, Dale Hines, and Chuck Hines, all of Rome; sixteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Danielle) McCarthy, Jane (Jim) Mackenzie, Dale Hines Jr., Amy Hines, Wayne (Chelsea) Hines, Jr., David Hines, Clarence R. (Jess) Chester III, Crystal Chester, Acadia Chester, Owen Chester, and Logan Chester; twenty-three great-grandchildren including a special great-granddaughter, Alexis Pape; one great great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.  Clarence was predeceased by his mom, Sarah Case; his father and step-mom, Walter and Gladys Chester; a son, Timothy Chester; a grandson, Richard Chester; and his siblings, Roger Syres, Jerri Colique, Carol Nelson, Walter Chester, Clayton Chester, David Chester, Donald Chester, Richard Chester, Diane Dalson, and Helen Chester.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St. Rome.  Family and friends are invited and may call on prior to the service from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
