I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the DeCarlo family during this most difficult time. My heart breaks for you as there are no words to comfort you. Please know, Mike was loved by so many people, who also share in your loss.
So who was Mike DeCarlo? From my perspective, Mike was a son, brother, husband, Poppy to his pet cat (Mousie), classmate, and above all a fiercely loyal friend as well as being a true animal lover. Mike had so many interests and nicknames, depending on what stage he was in during his life. I knew Mike as Mikeyson (my nickname for him), Jimmy Neutron, The Music Man, The Pizza Man…. To me, Mike was like my little brother, from a different mother. He was always there when I needed help and for that I will be forever grateful.
When I first met Mike, he was dating my BFF’s sister, Monica. That was well over 23 years ago. I thought to myself, he had such an infectious smile and a personality that was larger than life. Mike was so in love with Monica and they soon married. Over the years I learned that Mike was also a huge ‘foodie’. His appetite was as large as his personality, endless. Mike could tell you where to go for the best specialty meals, or in his case, sometimes, appetizers, as he would call them. To this day, Mike was the only person I’ve ever known who could eat an entire large pizza and 20 wings in one sitting. Yet he remained a tall, lean, physically active person. Throughout the years, Mike never ceased to amaze me with his appetite. He always enjoyed the various meals his sister-in-law, Amy, would prepare for him. Neither time nor distance were ever a deterrent if Mike was craving a certain type of meal.
Along with his food attraction, Mike loved music more than the above average person. He could talk about his favorite music, classic rock from the 70’s, and had the music library to prove it. Mikes’ vast knowledge of music was impressive and quite extraordinary, from the genres, members, songs, dates of release, etc and was pretty much the Rainman of music. His family and friends shared one thing in common……the music CDs that Mike burned for them. I don’t believe there were many people Mike didn’t share his love of music with and it became obvious that he wanted them to enjoy it as much as he did. He got to know the Nurses who were involved with his care, discovering their taste in music, and at his next appointment, Mike would present them with a CD he burned for them, music genre specific.
Mike always looked forward to ‘sailing’ with Monica on their free weekends. From garage sailing, to flea markets, auctions, estate sales or wherever they could find a good deal…..always coming home with their ‘hot deals’. He would talk about the awesome deal he got whether it was a turntable, receiver, speaker or some other technical music piece to add to his repertoire.
Mike always put his family above all else. He was always there for them and always was the life of the party. I don’t believe Mike ever met a stranger that remained as such. He would share his thoughts and interests and they soon became friend’s discovering common interests.
There were numerous times Mike and I would compare our military experiences. He, of course, had been in the Air Force, Military Police, whereas, I was in Maintenance, specifically the NDI shop. The places we traveled to, the people we met always led to lengthy conversations. Mike shared with me how proud he was to have served our country, as was I. I know his Mom would send him a card every Veterans Day to thank him for his service. Well Mikeyson, I too want to say Thank You for your service.
During these last 26 months, it has been an honor and a privilege to have helped with Mikes’ care in whatever capacity that was needed. He remained so upbeat and positive, trying so hard to beat his health demons and not be a burden to his family or friends. The transition from this life was made better because of the loving care he received during his last months.
I consider myself lucky that Mike touched my life. I have many happy memories and he will never be forgotten. We are all broken with such sadness over this tragic loss of such a kind soul. It gives me great solace knowing that Mike is now at peace and is with God. We love and miss you Mikey……………until we meet again….hugs from your big Sister, Jeannieson (his nickname for me).

I am blessed to be related to Mike through my marriage to Mikey's brother, Phil DeCarlo. No matter what we did with Mike, we were always smiling and laughing. Mike was happy, loved to get a bargain and do vintage shopping. We had a blast spending time with Mike and Monica going thrifting for vintage items. The last time, prior to this summer, we visited was in 2016 where we shared a meal with Mike and Monica at TJ's Restaurant in Cleveland, NY, one of Mike's favorite places to eat. It was our wedding anniversary. Mike will be missed and never forgotten. Until we meet again!

Mike “Mikey” DeCarlo, may you rest in peace.
Mikey loved a lot of things, and, in turn, was loved by many. His passion was admirable for those things he most loved.
For starters, he loved a good deal. He’d buy a camel in a rainforest if the price was right. He’d walk home beaming about any possible item acquired if he thought he got the upper half of a good deal. “Hey Mikey, what are you going to do with a prosthetic leg?” I’d ask. He’d simply reply, “Who knows? But there ain’t no way you can get one online for less than a few hundred dollars, and I paid ten!”
The only thing he loved more than a sweet bargain? Food. Mountains of food. Utica food: Chicken Riggies, Pizza, Steak – Buffalo Wings. That boy could put down more food than his newly acquired camel could, and he would still walk away skinny and energetic. His stomach was an endless cavern, and he took his eating to near competitive levels. Cannoli, pusties, half-moons, tomato pie. He also loved Mable Ann’s burnt peanut butter cookies, for reasons I will never understand. Every year she would try in vain to cleanly bake off this special holiday treat made just for him, and every year she would ultimately burn them to a crisp. But Mikey loved them anyway, looked forward to them, and had even said he occasionally made them at home and burnt them just like Mable did. I will never be certain if he liked burnt peanut butter cookies or if he just liked the fact that she made them specifically for him. It was their special love language.
And as we all know, Mike also loved music, classic rock to be specific. I am not sure he ever listened to any other genre (willingly at least). Anything from the 70’s - good or bad, he didn’t care. If it had a basic kick drum, overdriven guitar, a harmonic chorus and a keyboard track, he was sold. He had all the great classic albums - as many of us do, the Scorpions, Boston, Journey, but he also had a huge collection of obscure recordings – Krokus, Orion the Hunter, Chilliwack. He even had an affinity for bad records, one-hit-wonder-artists who made terrible follow-up albums or lost their star performers in lineup changes. He still loved it all. Plus, he’d give anything a listen - B sides too! If he could find them cheap and they were from his era, they would become part of his mountain of albums not even he knew how to inventory. No number of copies was too many (if the price was right). He also loved vintage stereo equipment; he leaves us with enough high wattage amplification to fuel the PA systems of no less than 13 football stadiums. He loved making recordings on CDs captured from the actual vinyl and in his later years he loved shopping for albums to add to my own personal collection – that he was primarily responsible for (he gave me most of the albums I have to this day). And most importantly, he was dead-on-right, the dynamics of the vintage method of capturing and playing rock music cannot be beat, even with today’s technology. He scoffed at online streaming choosing sound quality and ritual over modern convenience.
Mike also loved family. He spoke most highly of his stepfather, a hard-working barber. Mikey was also a fantastic son to our father, Dick, taking care of him when need be and cruising around town looking for trouble. My condolences to the DeCarlo family for their loss.
But most importantly, he loved my sister, Monica. She was his world.
I am glad we have all had the pleasure of knowing Mikey for the years he was with us. He will be sorely missed. He had a strong run with cancer after his diagnosis and kept a positive attitude, never letting anyone know if he was scared or saddened by his discomfort until it was no longer possible. His strength of character and loyalty were unparalleled.
Rest in Peace Mike. May the heavens be full of Marantz-powered stereophonics, solid-state tubes, endless libraries of (only) classic rock albums and more imports than ever imaginable here on this earth.
With Love, your Brother-in-law Richard and his Family in New Hampshire – Sharon, Scout and Cassie

My favorite memory of Mike was high school graduation. We wound up at Mike's house later in the evening. His mom got out the photo albums to show his friends. It still makes me laugh thinking of his mom showing us a photo and telling us that when he was little, Mike pulled out all of his eyelashes. Apparently it took his family awhile to figure out why he looked different.

Mike and my brother, Greg, were close friends growing up. They used to bike ride all over, and I got to go a couple times. When I wanted my bike painted from light blue to red, Mike said, "No problem." He took my bike apart down to the frame. He painted it in our garage. He even straightened out the rims. He knew everything about bikes. I loved how well it came out. I still have that bike today, I never got rid of it. Greg moved away years ago and life and careers get in the way of hanging out with our loved ones. I'm sorry that we lost touch with Mike. He was a great friend who I'll always miss and think of.

Sending very Heartfelt Sympathy, I am so saddened and send warm wishes of peace and comfort and love to my dearest Monica, and to Mikie’s family and friends, in this most difficult time of grief and sorrow.
I surely will miss Mikie and that fantastic smile he always displayed, and his jokes, and his many stories, and the love he had for Monica, and of course, his Music…..
I will always have fond memories of all the many get togethers we had, we had such fun and good times. Mikie always had the patience of “Job”, as he perused his I-Pad, when Monica and I spent hours sifting over treasures. I don’t know how, but he always loved my “burnt” peanut butter cookies and looked for them every time we got together. I couldn’t bake them right for love nor money, but he insisted he liked them that way….go figure!
In Loving Memory of you Mikie, now at supreme peace in Heaven, till we meet again. Greatly loved, deeply missed, A Treasure…!!! Much Love, Ann
(I know, I always spelled his name that way….Mikie)

Mike loved to hang out with my girls. When they were young kids, Mike would volunteer to come to the house and watch the girls so Heather and I could have a date night. They would all play video games and gobble down cookies and snacks all night long. Cruising the World was there favorite. Nobody could beat crazy Uncle Mikey at this car racing game. He wouldn’t stand for it and it drove my kids nuts. Hahahahaha!! Heather and I would get home after midnight to find these knuckleheads still up while the video games were thumping and blasting through the surround sound system. Mike would stay the night. After we got the kids to bed, Mike and I would continue playing video games til 4am! What wonderful memories!

My sincere condolences go out to Monica. Mike had an infectious smile, sense of humor. You loved being around him and laughing at his antics. When he was in basic training, I would get him and his buddies and bring them home for a few homemade meals on the weekends he was allowed off base. It was only then that I realized this man could put away some food! He cost me a bunch of groceries and I loved every minute of it, and our time together, and couldn’t wait til I could go get him again. Mike holds a very special place in my heart. Rest in peace now Mikey.
