Al left school at age 17 to join the Navy in World War II. He became a radar specialist on the Naval destroyer, U.S.S. Izard, which was active in the Pacific. After the war, in 1946, he began working for the government and was transferred to Rome Air Development Center (RADC) as a radar engineer, where he met his future wife, Mary. He was a respected expert on radar systems, improving radar technology for international defense and diplomacy.
In 1975, Al retired from RADC and started a consulting company, in partnership with Joseph Eannarino, working all over the world. He and Mary bought Delta Knolls golf course in Rome in 1974 and expanded that business along with their son, Michael. He loved being on the grounds, driving the tractor and teaching his grandchildren how to play golf.
Alfonse loved art, collecting from many different cultures on his travels. He was a voracious reader and follower of the news, and attended lunches with the Top of the Hill gang (RADC retirees). His favorite activity was dancing with Mary, especially at Griffis Ski Club events.
Al was known for his kindness, generosity and wonderful spirit, still cheerful at 99. His wife, children and the lives of his grandchildren filled his heart. He felt blessed to have such a wonderful group of caregivers, especially Kim, whom he credited for his longevity. This group became part of his family, which is forever grateful for the loving care he received.
