Obituary of Mary J. Centro

Mary J. Centro, 80, of the Town of Western, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023, at Rome Health. She was born in Rome on May 21, 1943, the daughter of the late Samuel and Mildred Murabito. She was a graduate of Rome Catholic schools and on January 16, 1962, she was united in marriage to Gerald W. Centro. He passed away September 7, 1985.

Mary worked at Revere Copper and Brass Co. before retiring from the Insite House in Utica. She was a member of the Westernville Presbyterian Church.

Mary was a 50-year resident of the Town of Western and  served as the Town of Western Clerk for many years and also as the sexton of Westernville Cemetery. She was a local historian and through extensive research two books, Around Delta Lake, Lee and Western and The Last Village of Delta. She was able to compile many vintage images of the communities and loved to talk about local history.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Celesta Slater (William); two sons, Eric Centro (Joanna) and Jason Centro (Robin); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Rosario, Joseph and Robert Murabito.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 2^nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Westernville Presbyterian Church. Interment will take place in Westernville Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, NY 13440, on Sunday, October 1^st from 2-4:00 p.m.
