Obituary: Barbara W. Cooper, 84, of Main St., Verona, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Oneida Healthcare Center with her loving family at her side. She was born on May 2, 1924, in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Frank and Emelia Zerhusen Willenburg. She was a graduate of St. Aloysious Academy in Rome, and received her Bachelor's Degree from the College of St. Rose in Albany. On August 20, 1949, she was united in marriage with Harland W. Cooper in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Rome.
Barbara was a teacher in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District for twenty-six years, retiring in 1983. She was the V.V.S. Teacher of the Year in 1982. She previously taught in the Copenhagen School District.
She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Verona and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving besides her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Harland; are two daughters and sons-in-law, Maryann and David Anderson, of Troy, and Barbara and Robert Sherwood, of North Creek; three sons, David and Janey Cooper, of Branford, CT, Richard and Barbara Cooper, of New Hartford, and Kenneth and Anna Cooper, of Sherrill; two sisters, Mary Willenburg, of Rome, and Anne Morris, of St. Petersburg, FL; a brother, Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Willenburg, of Utica; eleven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 10:00 AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, Verona, at 11:00 AM where the Rev. Edmund J. Morelle and Rev. Msgr. Francis J. Willenburg will concelebrate. Interment will take place in Verona Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Processing Center, 6725 Lyons St., PO Box 7, East Syracuse, NY, 13057.
