Obituary: John H. Halupka, 88, of 801 N. James St., formerly of Link Rd., Rome, and Mill St., Northwestern, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Stonehedge Nursing Home following a long illness. He was born on June 15, 1920, in Verona, the son of Karol and Marya Matlaszek Halupka. He attended Rome Schools. On August 6, 1949, John was united in marriage with Alina Wojtus in Central Square. Mrs. Halupka passed away on May 30, 2008.
Mr. Halupka was a civil engineer at Griffiss Air Force Base for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1977.
John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during WWII in the European and Pacific Theatres. While in the Pacific Theatre, he served in Pearl Harbor.
He was a member of Transfiguration Church and a life member of the Rome Polish Home.
Surviving are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Anne Beckett, of Phoenix, Arizona; Janet and Mike Keller, of Gig Harbor, Washington; Barbara and Alan Smolinski, of Northwestern; Donna and Michael Pratt, of Lee Center; a sister, Marion Wherry, of Fort Myers, FL; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by two sisters, Sophie Schmidt and Helen Halupka.
John's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Stonehedge Nursing Home Staff of Wing Two for their kindness and compassion shown to him.
Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 9:15 AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial at Transfiguration Church at 10:00AM where the Rev. Mark A. Pasik will officiate. Interment will take place at Lee Valley Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
